In Venice the condemned man was executed by drowning in the dark waters of the lagoon. In the otherworldly version of the Venetian Republic, which is ruled over by the organisation, Heel!, the rubber-man - whose enforced metamorphosis seems well advanced - is tested by his submersion in a lowered cage. Should he re-emerge from the depths, he is gaffed and branded, his impervious rubbery skin imprinted by the red-hot sole of the black stiletto boot.
